Some say that the average is golden, and maybe that is true for Gibson Custom's Alvin Lee ES-335 as well. There are musicians who would like to see more features on Alvin Lee ES-335, but Gibson Custom felt that Alvin Lee ES-335 provides enough features for a given price and the market that Gibson Custom shoots for. Perhaps there are better equipped guitars then this one, but Alvin Lee ES-335 will deliver for what it's built for.
Alvin Lee ES-335 guitar is an instrument that will sound great plugged in any amplifier, and has earned confidence with many guitar players, mostly because of it's tone. Gibson Custom's Alvin Lee ES-335 stands up to a task of playing various music styles easily, and yet you can build your own recognizable tone without much effort.
You could find a better fitted guitar, but Alvin Lee ES-335 is ready to be played by any musician willing to take time and adjust it to his/her needs. Gibson Custom built a guitar that has nice finish but it lack something that would make it feel even better. Guitar stays in tune reasonably well, if you don't force it too much, and the Alvin Lee ES-335's neck is playable.
Some might say that Gibson Custom didn't go all the way in providing a reliable and durable instrument, but Alvin Lee ES-335 isn't that bad. It will serve you well most of times, though you should be wary and have backups in situations where you feel Alvin Lee ES-335 might let you down, such as gigs and studio sessions.
