Explorer was first introduced back in the late 1950s as part of Gibson`s Modernist series concept. Some twenty years later, after almost two decades after it`s introduction, Explorer finally made a breakthrough as one of the favorite guitars of then emerging metal scene. Simple flat-top design, 22-fret fingerboards, active electronics and classic two-piece hardtail bridges were the main features of Explorer. Vast majority of subsequent models based on Gibson`s original Explorer followed this pattern. ESP`s EX models, however, break the convention occasionally. EX-420DX is fit with a Floyd Rose bridge, instead of the classic two-piece. Solid and single-cut body mahogany/maple body of this model is paired with a set in maple neck and topped with a pair of EMG pickups (81/60). 22-fret fingerboard made of rosewood completes the specs list.
