In 2014, Gibson is celebrating a huge milestone, their 120th year in the guitar making business. They`ve been around longer than most of the competition and have seen that much more turbulence, as well as sunny days. In order to properly celebrate the anniversary, Gibson has introduced a wide range of new and updated guitars and basses. Among them, there are six SG series models and one Firebird. SGJ, SGM, SG Special, SG Futura, SG Standard and SG Derek Trucks are the new SG models, while the 2014 Firebird is the only Firebird model. Prices range from $500 (SGJ) to $2,000 (SG Derek Trucks) and there`s something for every SG and Firebird fan.
Gibson 2014 SGJ opens up the review section of this article. It is the single most affordable SG with Gibson USA badge on it. Gibson 2014 SGM is practically the same guitar as the already reviewed SGJ model, but with one major exception. SGM features the Min-E-Tune robotic tuning machines, instead of the classic ones found on SGJ. This feature alone raises the price tag from $544 to still very affordable $816. Gibson 2014 SG Special is one of three SG novelties with price tag under $1,000. It costs $979 and offers a solid and double-cut mahogany body, set in maple neck, two-piece bridge unit, pair o mighty Gibson 490 pickups (T in the bridge and R in the neck position), 22-fret rosewood fingerboard and classic tuners. Gibson 2014 SG Futura is one of two Futura concept models introduced for 2014. It shares a lot with the sibling LP Futura. Gibson 2014 Firebird is the only Firebird being reviewed in this article, as it is the only new Firebird model for 2014. Classic neck-through-body construction brings the classic mahogany wings on the sides and a strong maple/walnut neck in the middle.
