Seven guitars and two basses are being released by PRS. They arrive just in time for the upcoming NAMM Show. Pure class are two most fitting words to describe these updates.
PRS is one of the premier brands of electric guitars. For a long time they have been holding a distinguished position among the US brands. For less than thirty years in business, PRS has built a huge reputation and gained millions of fans around the world. For 2013 PRS introduces new models and updates of already existing models. Nine novelties total are being introduced, seven electric guitars and two basses. Of these seven guitars, two semi-hollow bodied signatures are named NS-15 and NS 14. They`re made for Neal Schon. Solid-bodied guitars include Paul`s Guitar, a model made for Paul Reed Smith, Brent Mason Signature, Custom 22, SC 245 and SC 245 Soapbar. Two basses introduced are both signature models. Both are made for Gary Grainger. Their names are Grainger 4 and Grainger 5.
PRS Paul`s Guitar opens the review section of this article. It is one gorgeous double-cut with body made of top shelf mahogany back and flamed maple top. This guitar is the production version of Paul`s personal guitar from his Private Stock collection and it`s equipped with only the best of the best features. Thus, the neck is made of mahogany, with set-in joint and 22-fret rosewood fingerboard on top. Only four color schemes are available for this model. Hardware is plated in nickel. PRS Grainger 5 is the first of two bass guitars introduced this time. It is a five-stringed signature model made for Gary Grainger. It comes with a set of exclusive specs, beginning with a mahogany/flamed maple body. Mahogany is used for the back and flamed maple for the carved top. Body is solid, double-cut and paired with a bolt-on maple neck. 24-fret maple fingerboard is installed on top. Active PRS bass pickups and PRS bridge are featured on the body. PRS Custom 22 for 2013 is one of the finest models in the pack. It comes with a solid, double-cut body made of mahogany back and flamed maple top. Top is carved and available in a wide range of color options. Pickups are HFS in the bridge and Vintage in the neck. Active humbuckers, of course. Mahogany neck is set, equipped with Pttern contour and topped with a 22-fret rosewood fingerboard. Hybrid hardware includes PRS tuners and a choice between PRS stoptail and PRS tremolo. PRS Brent Mason Signature is a magnificent double-cut guitar with six-string construction and bolt-on neck. It has a bit more of a vintage vibe, than the rest of the models introduced. It has a flat mahogany body, which is paired with a bolted rock maple neck. PRS installs a set of three pickups, bridge and neck humbuckers and middle single coil. Master volume, master tone, two mini switches and a five-position blade switch control them. Rock maple neck is topped with a 22-fret maple fingerboard with bird inlays. PRS Neal Schon NS-15 is the first of two signature models made for Neal. Both are semi-hollow bodied and equipped with Floyd Rose bridges. NS-15 comes with a gorgeous body made of curly maple back, mahogany sides and spruce top. It is paired with a maple neck. Floyd Rose bridge is fronted by a pair of PRS 57 humbuckers. Master volume, master tone and a three-way toggle pickup switch comprise the controls unit. Maple neck is topped with a 22-fret ebony fingerboard with bird inlays. PRS Neal Schon NS-14 is the second of two semi-hollow bodied guitars introduced and is at the same time the second Neal Schon signature model. It comes with mahogany back and sides with flamed maple top. Top panel is available in a range of vibrant color schemes, while the back and sides remain dark. Floyd Rose is the center feature of this model, as it is a new concept for PRS and also a feature very seldom seen on a semi-hollow guitar. PRS 57 humbuckers are installed in the front and are equipped with a basic controls unit. Neck is made of mahogany, it`s set and topped with a 22-fret rosewood fingerboard. PRS SC 245 is one of two single-cut six-stringers introduced in this update. It comes with a solid, carved body made of mahogany back and flamed maple top. Top is carved and bound in exquisite binding. Two-piece bridge section features top-load construction and it`s fronted with a pair of active PRS humbuckers. Separate volume and tone knobs are accompanied by a three-way toggle pickup switch. Mahogany neck is set and equipped with Pattern contour. 22-fret fingerboard is made of rosewood and decorated with bird inlays. PRS SC 245 Soapbar is the single coil variant of the already reviewed SC 245. This one also features a solid, single-cut body made of mahogany back with maple top. Flamed maple is used on burst finishes and plain maple on clear finishes. Two-piece bridge is also installed on this one, but it`s fronted with P-90 pickups. These two PRS soapbars feature the same controls unit as the humbuckers on regular 245. Neck is made of mahogany and it has a wide fat contour. It`s topped with a 22-fret rosewood fingerboard. PRS Grainger 4 is the final model in this review and it is a standard four-stringed variant of already mentioned Grainger 5 Bass. It is basically the same instrument, with only a different string count. Mahogany body is covered with a flamed maple top. Body is solid and double-cut. On top, PRS installs a fixed bridge with string-through construction. It`s fronted by the same set of humbuckers like the Grainger 5.
