Launched back in 2008, the Prophecy line promised a revolution and groundbreaking performance. Today, at the beginning of 2012 it brings us the Les Paul Custom Plus GX model with 24 jumbo frets, fast neck and mighty Gibson USA pickups. As the tradition proposes, all Epiphone LPs, and this one included, have flat tops above their mahogany backs. This model has a quilted maple top, and it is bound in five layers of white and black. This solid-bodied guitar is available in black cherry and heritage cherry sunburst. The bridge is a trusty old tune-o-matic with a stoptail bar. They are both covered with gold plating. The pickups on this shredder are open coil Gibson USA 498T humbucker with Alnico V magnets in the bridge and open coil Gibson USA 490R humbucker with Alnico V magnets in the neck position. They are controlled through split volume and tone knobs with a three-way toggle switch. The neck is made of mahogany and equipped with a speed taper D contour and a mortise & tenon joint. The fingerboard is made of ebony and sports 24 jumbo frets with abalone block & triangle inlays. The Fingerboard radius is 14" in combination with a standard 24-3/4" scale. The MSRP for Epiphone Prophecy Les Paul Custom Plus GX is set at $999.

This is as close as you can get to a Gibson Les Paul without the hefty price tag. If you think about it is is a Gibson Les Paul assembled in China. The quality of the build and attention to detail is amazing. The only thing missing is the maple cap but once you plug it in you won't even miss it. I went over mine with a magnifying glass and can honestly say I have not seen a Gibson Standard built any better. I always get an action job done but this one was very good out of the box so no need. It is not a chambered body so the heft is definitely there. But to me that makes it even more a classic like the older Gibson's. The jumbo frets take a bit of getting used to if you have never played them. The satin finished neck is something all Gibson's should have. Moving around the fretboard is a breeze. There is no genre of music this guitar can't handle. Mine is a GX with 490 and 498 pickups. Sounds like a Gibson to me. Buy this one and you will never regret it. Mine is a real keeper.
