Back in 1963, when the initial run of the now cult Explorer ended Gibson came back with a similar guitar, but with softer edges and more conventional design and construction features. Firebird quickly became a favorite among the players who wanted Gibson quality and tone, but disliked LP, ES and other traditional Gibsons. Some 53 years later, Gibson USA introduces Firebird V 2016 in T (traditional specs) and HP (high performance specs) variants. The HP option is loaded with modern hardware and electronics, while still preserving the tone and feel of the original `60s Firebirds.
Firebird V 2016 HP is a solid, flat-top guitar with a three-part body. Wings are made of mahogany and the neck running through the middle is comprised of nine layers of mahogany and walnut. Neck is also equipped with classic Firebird contour and fast-access heel. Also, there is a 22-fret rosewood fingerboard on its top (trapezoid inlays, 1.745" zero-fret nut and 12" radius).
Electronics section is equipped with a pair of Firebird Minibucker pickups (known as 495T and 495R) with a standard set of controls (2x volume, 2x tone, 3-way toggle pickup switch). The end result is one of the best sounding Firebirds ever created. $1,449 price tag only makes it even more attractive.
Other premium features include: tune-o-matic bridge with titanium saddles, G Force robotic tuners of the latest generation, gold plated output jack, zero-fret nut (also made of titanium), fast-access heel and mother of pearl inlays.
