Paul Waggoner of Between the Buried and Me is one of the premier representatives of the new prog metal shred scene. His style is best described as a fusion between John Petrucci, Steve Vai, Alan Holdsworth and Pat Metheny. His first signature Ibanez, PWM100, kicks off this October and looks like a strong candidate for the signature guitar of the year.
PWM100 is basically a beefed up S series six-stringer with a 44mm thick body (RG series` standard thickness) made of super lightweight ash. This type of construction yields a bright and powerful tone, dominant but not overbearing. It is set in the perfect contrast to Dustie Waring`s all-mahogany PRS signature. Neck on this model is the custom PW version of the lightning-fast Wizard contour found on the standard S and RG Ibanez models. It is bolted to the body and topped with a 24-fret roewood fingerboard. Offset dot inlays, 43mm wide locking nut (standard three-screw locking nut) and 16.9" radius complete one of the most comfortable and fastest fingerboards around.
Electronics section is outfitted with a pair of humbucking pickups made by Mojotone. Both are Paul`s signatures and their official name is PW Hornets. They`re passive/ceramic (bridge) and passive/alnico (neck) and give a mighty, well rounded tone. Controls unit is a super simple one, considering the fact that this guitar is made for a lead player in a prog metal band. It consists of a master volume knob, coil-splitting mini-switch and a three-position blade switch taken from the standard S series. Among other major features, Edge locking tremolo bridge, die-cast tuning machines and the standard 25-1/2" scale are found.
With the amazing looks and mind blowing tone, this killer six-string is bound to leave a permanent mark on history of metal music. Its only downside might perhaps be its price tag. PWM100 clocks in at around $2,700 which is pretty high and leaves a lot of potential players out of the picture.
