Performing Artist Series Acoustic-Electric Guitars by Martin
Performing Artist Series from Martin Guitars offers stage-ready acoustic-electric guitars. DCPA 5K belongs to the lower ranks of the Performing Artist Series, and serves as one of it`s entry models. It was introduced at the NAMM Show earlier this year, along with all of the other Martin catalog updates. DCPA 5K kicks off as an acoustic-electric dreadnought with a cutaway body made of high pressure laminate koa back and sides and solid spruce top. Being the budget-friendly model, some of the cosmetic features had to be scratched off the DCPA 5K specs. There is no binding around the top, but the tortoise pickguard and double circle rosette are kept. This dreadnought comes with hand rubbed finish on natural color. The bridge is made of black richlite and features a set of white string pins with black dots and white corian saddle. The electronics department is made up of Fishman F1 Analog setup with volume and tone control knobs mounted onto the side of the guitar. The neck is made of stratabond and features performing artist contour with a mortise & tenon joint set at the 14th fret. The fingerboard is made of black richlite and it features 20 frets, offset dot inlays and 1-3/4" wide corian nut. The MSRP for DCPA 5K is set at $1,099.

For the price, this is an excellent mid-range guitar. For all that it sits at the bottom of the Martin totem pole, its build quality is quite good. Without top binding and with an unvarnished top, it will no doubt be a bit more susceptible to wear (I've only had it a short while, so am going based on assumptions about durability here, not on experience.) The tone, both acoustic and plugged in, is excellent. Deep resonate bass, without being boom-y. Strong, clean mid-tones. Clean, chiming upper range without being excessively bright or jangley. All-in-all a good, responate, full sound mix. I got mine used for about $525 (with a couple of minor cosmetic dings to the body) and would rate it a steal at that price. Frankly, based on its tone quality, I'd rate it a very good deal anywhere under $750.
