For 2014, Gibson has updated the SG bass series with two models and this Special is the affordable one. Looking at the specs list, one might draw a conclusion that this is one of the smartest assembled basses ever, having many high quality components and standard Gibson build quality on one side and toned down, discrete elegance on the other (lack of luxurious hardware and decorations marvelously incorporated into the classic SG design). Body of this shrewd four-stringer is solid, double-cut and made entirely of mahogany. Thanks to the famous Gibson construction, SG basses traditionally have a very strong and sharp tone (on equal grounds with a lot thicker and heavier basses made by other brands). Bridge section is fit with a traditional three-point adjusted bridge with top-load construction. Together with the big Grover Shamrock tuners on the headstock, this reliable and tie-tested bridge keeps the compact SG in perfect tune and intonation throughout the hardest and longest sessions and gigs. Minibucker in the bridge position and the full-sized humbucker in the neck position are controlled with two volume knobs and a master tone knob. There is no pickup switch, as the volume knobs take over that task. Maple neck is strong, very playable and is made of mahogany. On it`s top, there is a 20-fret rosewood fingerboard. The MSRP for 2014 SG Special Bass is set at $762.
