AS-1FR FM is, most definitely, not a beginner guitar nor it is a very affordable one. But, considering that is an LTD version of a model which costs around $6,000 (Alex Skolnick FR FM), it can be deemed pretty inexpensive. $1,200 price tag under the LTD logo brings a pretty upscale specs list, though some compromises had to be made. For example, Alex Scolnick`s signature Duncans and custom 12th fret inlay were scratched from the roster. Also, a different Floyd Rose bridge model and a lower grade top are featured on this, otherwise, stellar LTD. AS-1FR FM starts off with an EC (LTD`s version of Eclipse, identical to the original) body made of mahogany base and a flamed maple top. Bound top is covered with a Black Aqua Sunburst paint job in gloss finish (a bit less elaborate than the one on ESP version). Three-piece maple neck features a set-thru joint and is topped with a 22-fret rosewood fingerboard (same features as the original, save for the 12th fret inlay). Pickups lineup ESP and Alex Skolnick chose for this model is: Seymour Duncan TB-4 in the bridge and Seymour Duncan SH-1 in the neck. A classic all-round combo, perfect for traditional metal players who need a strong, meaty rhythm with exceptionally juicy leads. Controls unit is taken over from the original, it contains dual volume knobs, a master tone with a push/pull switch and a three-way toggle switch. Floyd Rose bridge with a locking nut and Grover tuners promise surgically precise tuning and intonation. All in all, this is one of the best options for metal players who identify as both rhythm and lead players, and have a soft spot for a tricked out LP.
