Current Limited Run lineup in Gibson`s USA catalog hints that Gibson is seriously contemplating a big time expansion into metal territories. Les Paul CM Black with the revolutionary top-load Floyd Rose trem system and SG 7 models in Dark and Light variants come in very limited quantities and with pretty hefty price tags (SG models come in at around $2,500), which might seriously dampen the effort. Hopefully, the eventual regular versions won`t cost that much.
SG Dark 7 is a luxurious seven-string guitar clad in the iconic SG twin-horned outfit. Following the tradition, Dark 7 has a beveled top, flat back and almost symmetrical cutaway horns. The body is made of mahogany and is paired with a slim taper-contoured neck, also made of mahogany. 24-fret richlite fingerboard comes with trapezoid inlays (seventh fret inlay is fashioned into a roman VII), 1.96" wide nut and 12" radius.
Pickups on this monster Seymour Duncan`s SH-4 (bridge) and SH-1n (neck). They`re controlled through a standard SG/LP controls unit and deliver an unholy amount of sheer, purebred metal awesomeness. This awesomeness does come at a high price, but this is a limited run model so anything goes.
So, what else a $2,499 price tag gets you on a metal SG made by Gibson USA? Well, a two-piece top-load bridge (tune-o-matic bridge in the front and stoptail bar behind it), Grover tuners, top quality electronics & hardware, as well as unmatched tone and playability.
