Les Paul Standard is the Les Paul among the Les Pauls and the example against all other Les Pauls are weighed, measured and placed within the Les Paul series roster. Ever since the introduction of the Standard in the 1958, Les Paul world revolves around it. For 2014, Gibson is introducing the new king of the hill, new general of the LP army, 2014 Les Paul Standard. Besides the basic one, there is this model and Standard Premium. Differences between them are very subtle and also very few. As oppose to the AAA flamed maple top and Min-E-Tune system on the regular Standard, Standard Plus comes with an AAAA flamed maple top and the classic vintage-styled tuning machines (without the Min-E-Tune system). Other than that, these two are identical guitars. Even the color options available for these two match. Brilliant Red, Heritage Cherry Sunburst Perimeter, Honeyburst Perimeter, Ocean Water Perimeter, Rootbeer Burst Perimeter and Tobacco Sunburst Perimeter options are available for the Standard Plus, as well. All are finished in vintage gloss and all of them feature the old school binding around the body and neck. Solid and single-cut mahogany body has the latest generation of the weight relief system (a system of weight reducing chambers strategically placed around the body). This significantly reduces the weight of the guitar, but brings no harm to the cult Les Paul Standard tone. On the top, there is a two-piece flamed maple cap with matching patterns. Bridge unit is exactly the same as one found on the regular LP Standard for 2014. It`s made up of two chrome-plated parts, the tune-o-matic bridge in the front and stoptail bar in the back. They`re matched with the classic tuning machines, instead of the modern Min--E-Tune system predominant on the modern LP models. Burstbucker Pro Rhythm sits in the bridge position, while the Burstbucker Lead is in the bridge. These super potent pickups, in combination with the modern controls unit, prove that they`re true chameleons and that they can pull it all off. Two volume knobs have coil-splitting push/pull switches, which are becoming more and more common on upscale LPs. Neck tone has the push/pull switch for reversing the pickup`s polarity, while the push/pull switch on the bridge tone knob bypasses the circuit and sends the raw tone of the full bridge humbucker straight to the output jack. Pickup selection is done through the classic three-way toggle switch. Set in neck is made of mahogany and is attached to the body through a classic mortise and tenon system. Asymmetrical slim taper contour found on this one is the same as the ones found on many other modern upscale LPs. One-piece rosewood fingerboard has 22 cryogenically tempered frets, figured acrylic trapezoid fret inlays, 12" radius and 1.695" wide string nut. The MSRP for this intermediate LP Standard variant is set at pretty hefty $3,269.
