Ever since 1958 and the introduction of the first ever Les Paul with the iconic Standard badge, Standards have ruled the roster of the most important single-cut guitar Gibson has ever made. As it`s badge says, Standard is the one against all other Les Pauls have been, are and will be measured and positioned in the catalog. Also, it serves as a standard of quality of build and tone. Since it`s beginnings, Standard was an expensive guitar, which not every musician can easily obtain, and with more than a good reason, for it offers almost custom shop level quality on a series production guitar. Sovereign ruler of the 2014 Les Paul roster, the majestic 2014 Les Paul Standard is available in three main variants. The basic one is named simply Les Paul Standard with AAA flamed maple top and Min-E-Tune system, medium version is Les Paul Plus with AAAA flamed maple top and classic vintage-styled tuners and Les Paul Standard Premium with a top grade quilt maple top and classic tuning machines. In this article, we will be reviewing the basic model, the 2014 Les Paul Standard. As all LPs in the current roster, it comes with a solid and single-cut mahogany body. Body is fit with the modern weight relief system, which significantly reduces the burden on player`s shoulders, without compromising the tone and performance value of the guitar. Triple A flamed cap made of two matching pieces is on the top. It`s carved and bound in creme binding. Rootbeer Burst Perimeter, Brilliant Red, Heritage Cherry Sunburst Perimeter, Honeyburst, Ocean Water Perimeter and Tobacco Sunburst Perimeter comprise the new and exciting color palette for the new king of the six-strings. These are also available for the majority of the new 2014 models. Instead of the classic thick bursts, 2014 models come with thinner and lighter perimeter burst patterns and vintage gloss finish, which give a special look and vibe to the new models. Bridge section on the new Standard is made up of the chrome-plated tune-o-matic bridge in the front and also chrome-plated stoptail bar in the back. With the help of the modern Min-E-Tune system, 2014 Les Paul Standard stays perfectly tuned even after the long and grueling playing sessions and concerts. Instead of the classic `57, `59 and `61 replica pickups, Standard is fit with Burstbucker Pro pickups. Burstbucker Pro Rhythm is in the neck position, while the Burstbucker Lead is in the bridge. In combination with premium electronics, top grade tonewoods and unmatched craftsmanship, these marvelous pickups produce Full, powerful and majestic tone. Versatile controls unit gives them limitless possibilities. Two traditional volume knobs are equipped with coil-splitting push/pull switches which can turn these roaring lions into purring kittens when needed. Neck tone knob is also fit with a push/pull switch, but instead of the coil-splitting, this one reverses the polarization of the neck pickup. Finally, the push/pull switch on the bridge tone knob bypasses the electronics and sends the raw signal of the full bridge humbucker straight to the output jack. Neck on this model is traditionally made of mahogany and for 2014, it`s fit with an asymmetrical 1960s slim taper contour in the back. Neck joint is the classic mortise and tenon with glued in neck. On it`s top, there is a 22-fret fingerboard made of a single piece of rosewood. It comes with cryogenically tempered frets, 12" radius, 1.695" wide string nut and figured acrylic trapezoid inlays. The MSRP for the new king is set at serious $2,942.
